Sony Pictures Classics has announced that it will release Bennett Miller‘s upcoming film Foxcatcher. Megan Ellison (Zero Dark Thirty) financed the film under her shingle Annapurna Pictures. Written by E. Max Frye (Something Wild) and Dan Futterman (Capote), the film chronicles the true story of John du Pont, a multimillionaire and paranoid schizophrenic who built a wrestling training facility, Team Foxcatcher, on his 800-acre Pennsylvania estate and in 1996, shockingly murdered Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler David Schultz.
Foxcatcher stars Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Steve Carell, Sienna Miller, Anthony Michael Hall and Vanessa Redgrave. Miller has gotten Best Picture nominations for Capote and Moneyball, and looks to do the same with Foxcatcher.
Here’s what Bennett Miller had to say:
“I’ve been discussing Foxcatcher with Michael and Tom since I began researching the story in 2005 and it’s always been my hope and expectation that they would distribute the film. Their passion and understanding of what Fpxcatcher could be and their ability to market unique and complex films makes SPC the ideal home for me. They were great partners on Capote, and I’m thrilled to be back with SPC.”
Foxcatcher hits theaters December 20, 2013.
