Jeff Nichols is one of the more exciting filmmakers in the game today. His first three features, Shotgun Stories, Take Shelter and Mud, are all excellent indicators of what’s to come from the writer/director. He was apparently in the mix to direct Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but turned it down to direct Midnight Special, a John Carpenter-esque sci-fi chase film. And the cast is already filling out.
Michael Shannon, whose appeared in all of Nichols’ films to date, is already on board. Now, the film adds Joel Edgerton and Kirsten Dunst.
Midnight Special centers on a father and his 8-year-old who go on the run when dad realizes the boy has some kind of special powers.
No word on whether Shannon or Edgerton will play the father role, or which role Dunst will be playing.
