With Paul Thomas Anderson‘s new film Inherent Vice currently shooting in Los Angeles, we get our first look at Joaquin Phoenix as Larry “Doc” Sportello, the pothead private eye who’s hired by an ex-girlfriend to investigate the disappearance of her wealthy lover. We also get our first look at newly casted Bridesmaids actress Maya Rudolph (PTA’s longtime girlfriend), who plays Petunia Leeway, a nurse at Dr. Buddy Tubeside’s vitamin shop. In Thomas Pynchon’s novel, Dr. Tubeside is known for injecting his patients with a B-12 energy shots.
Phoenix and Rudolph are joined by Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Katherine Waterston and Kevin J. O’Connor — and possibly even Sean Penn.
The cast has continued to fill out over the last few weeks, but with somewhere in the ballpark of 25 major characters in Pynchon’s novel, it’s not surprising. Only about half of those have been cast so far, so expect more to come.
