Inherent Vice, Paul Thomas Anderson‘s upcoming film, is filling out quite nicely. Just recently, Benicio Del Toro and Owen Wilson joined Joaquin Phoenix in the cast. And now, it’s being reported that Reese Witherspoon will take a role. Based on Thomas Pynchon‘s novel of the same name, the story follows the inept, pot-smoking private detective Doc Sportello (Phoenix) who is hired by his ex-girlfriend to investigate the disappearance of her wealthy lover.
Witherspoon will play Shasta Hepworth, Sportello’s ex-girlfriend, a role once rumored to be going to Charlize Theron. Along with Witherspoon, Martin Short and Jena Malone have joined the cast as well. Short’s role is still being kept under wraps, but Malone will play a former drug addict who asks Sportello for help.
Filming begins this month with a 2014 release date in mind.
