Paul Thomas Anderson‘s Inherent Vice will definitely be a departure from his recent projects — The Master and There Will Be Blood — both extremely dark and sinister in nature. Based on Thomas Pynchon‘s novel of the same name, the story follows the inept, pot-smoking private detective Doc Sportello, which Joaquin Phoenix is already set to play. Sportello is hired by an ex-girlfriend to investigate the disappearance of her wealthy lover. Benicio Del Toro has reportedly just signed on to join the project, and will play Sportello’s shady lawyer friend. Well, he’s not actually a lawyer per se, but gives counsel nonetheless.
Several key characters have yet to be cast, including the female lead Shasta Fay Hepworth, the woman who hires Doc, her boyfriend real estate mogul Mickey Wolfmann, and Lieutenant “Bigfoot” Bjornson, an L.A.P.D. officer and Doc’s nemesis
Previous rumors of Charlize Theron joining the cast, are still unconfirmed, but she would most likely play the role of Shasta Fey Hepworth. Kevin O’Connor, character actor who’s appeared in both PTA’s previous two films, has also joined the cast but his role isn’t clear just yet.
Inherent Vice begins filming this month.
