Antoine Fuqua joins the long list of directors who’ve been attached to the project. Including Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn and Rise of the Planet of the Apes helmer Rupert Wyatt. The Equalizer is loosely based on the TV series, and features Denzel Washington playing a solitary, monastic figure named Robert McCall. McCall is a veteran covert operative who, seeking redemption for his dark deeds, quits a CIA-like agency and puts a classified advertisement in the paper that reads simply: “Got a problem? Odds against you? Call the Equalizer.”
Sounds like Jack Reacher meets Taken. It sounds promising, but if any of Fuqua’s recent films have tell as to how this one will turn out, we’re probably looking at another Olympus Has Fallen. Which is out in theaters now and looks terrible. Hopefully I’m wrong. Denzel would be reunited with Fuqua, who directed his Oscar winning turn in Training Day. While Fuqua hasn’t officially signed on to direct yet, the film will begin production this spring in Boston if he does.
