Josh Radnor stars in his writing and directorial debut, Happythankyoumoreplease. Most know him as Ted Mosby in How I Met Your Mother. He’s a charming actor, and for his first film he doesn’t do a bad job behind the scenes either. Radnor plays Sam Wexler, a young writer who doesn’t really have it all together. He’s running late for a very important meeting when he sees a little boy get separated from his family on the subway. He tells the boy, who doesn’t speak a word, that everything will be ok. When he realizes the kid, Rasheen, doesn’t want to go home, Sam reluctantly lets him stay at his apartment.
Sam’s best friend, Annie (Malin Akerman from Couples Retreat, 27 Dresses) is having a party that night. She is a wonderfully sweet person who has the tendency to pick the wrong guys, which might stem from her belief that she’s not good enough (Annie has no hair because of an auto-immune disorder). While at the party, Sam runs into his cousin, Mary Catherine (Zoe Kazan), who is perhaps the opposite of Annie. She’s brash, sort of angry, and stuck in her ways. The movie follows these three characters through their New York lives as they face (or try to face) adulthood, love, and happiness. Sam is lovable but can be selfish, too. He meets Mississippi (Kate Mara from 127 Hours). Their relationship escalades quickly when he drunkenly suggests on their first night together that she live with him for the next three days. He must have forgotten that he also had a small child staying with him.
Annie has an office worker who just won’t leave her alone and won’t take the hint. Tony Hale (Arrested Development), is also called Sam, so Annie tells him her best friend’s name is Sam and she can’t have two Sam’s in her life. Hence, he is dubbed Sam #2. Hale is great as the nerdy sweet guy. Mary Catherine is dating Charlie (Paul Schreiber), who’s just returned from California and has an opportunity to work there. He’s thrilled at the idea of moving across the country but Mary Catherine HATES Los Angeles, so it’s a huge test on their relationship.
There wasn’t one storyline more interesting than the other; all were equally enjoyable and entertaining. But it seemed a little familiar, like it’s been done before. I liked it. I didn’t love it.
