‘She’s Out of My League’ Review

Release Date: 3/12/2010

She’s Out of My League, directed by Jim Field Smith and written by Sean Anders and John Morris (Hot Tub Time Machine, Sex Drive) is a comedy with some romantic elements. It’s a story that has been done before, with an awkward dorky guy meeting a very attractive woman, who he probably would never get in the real world. Despite the extremely cliché storyline and the director’s resume completely unknown, I came out of the theater feeling pleasantly surprised. Jay Baruchel is fantastic in the leading role and even though the writing has been done before, the movie was done in a way that kept me laughing and entertained the whole way through.

The story follows Kirk (Jay Baruchel), who dreams of being a pilot, but instead is a security guard at the Pittsburgh airport. Kirk’s life changes dramatically when he meets Molly (Alice Eve), an event planner who accidentally leaves her iphone behind at security. Kirk helps return her phone and to the amazement of his three friends Jack, Devon and Stainer (T.J. Miller, Nate Torrence and Mike Vogel), she actually asks him out on a date. They cannot believe that Kirk, a dorky 5, can end up with a hard 10 like Molly.

Jay Baruchel has been stealing scenes ever since he was on the Judd Apatow produced show ‘Undeclared’. He then moved on to a Judd Apatow film in ‘Knocked Up’ where he continued to steal scenes. Most recently he made his presence in a very funny role in the movie Tropic Thunder. He finally gets his hands on a lead role, playing Kirk, a part he has been typecast in. He makes the most of his opportunity by pulling off a hilarious part, with his awkward expressions and funny one-liners. Baruchel and Australian newcomer Alice Eve pull off a very realistic relationship.

The writing is what makes this movie extremely entertaining. The parts with Kirk interacting with his dumb friends make for the funniest scenes. It mixes the relationship stuff and the guy stuff perfectly that should keep both genders entertained. I was dying at Kirk’s friend Nate from the beginning of the film. He goes with Kirk to return Molly’s iphone and constantly quotes Disney movies. The ongoing joke never gets old and had me cracking up every time. I thought he was going to be my favorite of the three friends but by the end I really loved Stainer. He comes up with the most ridiculous theories throughout the movie and can never handle Kirk being with Molly. He gets funnier as the film goes on and at the end actually holds a pretty important role. The script has its cliché moments and you can pretty much see everything coming but for some reason it doesn’t take away from the entertainment value.

The movie feels like an Apatow film with great writing and romantic elements, mixed with a Farrelly Brother’s movie with some gross out raunchiness. It’s almost like ‘Knocked Up’ combined with ‘There’s Something About Mary’. I wouldn’t say it was as entertaining as ‘Knocked Up’ or as funny as ‘There’s Something About Mary’, nor was it as original as some of the romantic comedies of last year such as, ‘500 Days of Summer’, but it was a pleasant surprise. It should go down as a guilty pleasure for most crowds. Even with it’s unoriginal storyline it finds a way to keep you amused, whether it be with friends or your girlfriend, go see ‘She’s Out of My League’, it’s the first good comedy of 2010.

“It’s a tale as old as time, a song as old as rhyme”

  1. She glanced this way, I thought I saw… And when we touched, she didn’t shudder at my paw. No, it can’t be; I’ll just ignore… But then, she’s never looked at me that way before…
