Seeing the movie Valentine’s Day on Valentine’s Day seemed like a good idea – especially with such a star-studded cast. Unfortunately, it sucked. The writing is just plain bad. It’s predictable, cheesy, unrealistic, and definitely too long for a romantic comedy. And there’s too many stories. The Anne Hathaway-Topher Grace story should have been cut from the movie completely. It’s by far the worst storyline. The little boy could have been cut as well (he isn’t a very good actor). Emma Roberts covers the high school romance of the movie, and while she’s not bad, I really didn’t care about what happened with her.

Surprisingly, Roberts’ high school friend Felicia, played by Taylor Swift, was one of my favorite characters as the blond, bimbo type. She’s really funny and totally puts herself into the role (until the end when she can’t pull off a semi-serious part). There are exactly three surprises in the movie. The first one is unexpected. The second surprise involves Julia Roberts’ character. She has a secret the whole time and it’s so annoying because when you find out what her big secret is, it’s not a big deal. I don’t understand why she tries to be so mysterious about the whole thing. The third surprise goes along with the first surprise, and once again, I really didn’t care.
I did enjoy Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel. Garner is awesome when she pretends to be Patrick Dempsey’s waitress and later when she kicks the crap out of the ‘I hate Valentine’s Day’ piñata. Biel is funny about being depressed about love and she looks freaking amazing. If there’s a main character in the film it’s Ashton Kutcher as the owner of a small flower shop. He’s cute and funny and I like him as an actor, but the lines he spits out are super duper cheesy.

Basically, this is a beautiful A-list ensemble cast brought together to make a lot of money on Valentine’s Day. Whenever a movie like this comes out I hope and pray that it will be another ‘Love Actually’, but actually, that is highly unlikely.
If Shutter Island came out on Valentine’s Day you better believe I would have seen that instead.
