John Hamburg‘s last directorial effort came way back in 2004, when brought us the hilarious Along Came Polly. Which starred Ben Stiller, Jennifer Aniston and Philip Seymour Hoffman. But his latest film I Love You, Man had me rolling. Crying laughing. I seriously almost threw up a couple times because I was laughing so hard. Like, projectile vomit. Yeah, it exists.
Peter Klavin (Paul Rudd) is a successful real estate agent who’s recent engagemt to his girlfriend Zooey (Rachinda Jones) of eight months, has brought to light one thing. He doesn’t have anyone to be his “best man.” In fact, we find out from Peter’s Father (J.K. Simmons) that going all the way back to his childhood, he’s never even had a best friend. He’d always had girlfriends, but never a real best friend. So now, with some help from his gay brother Robby (Andy Samberg), Peter goes on a series of weird, flat-out uncomfortable excursions, or “man-dates” in order to find a best friend in time for his wedding. Then, during one of Pete’s open houses, he meets Sydney Fife (Jason Segel). Who, openly admits being there just for the free food and the vunerable “cougars.” Through their opposingly symetric personalities and played out in some of the most hysterical scenes, we learn that Peter and Sydney actually have a lot in common. Whether it’s during one of their Jam Sessions, or at a Rush Concert or just hanging out in Sydney’s man cave, the two become quite good friends. But will Pete’s relationship with Zooey suffer as a result? I don’t know, find out.
To be honest, I wasn’t to sure if I was going to like Paul Rudd in the beginning of the film. I don’t know why, every single movie I’ve ever seen him in he’s ridiculously funny. But as the movie progresses, both Paul Rudd and Jason Segel reveal a comedy routine that only those two could pull off. They bounced one-liners back and forth like a comedy tennis match. Through out the entire movie! And I garuntee that I missed at least handful of them because I couldn’t hear them over all the laughter. The dialogue and acting are what make this movie so goddamn funny. With Hamberg being a co-writer for films like Meet the Parents, Meet the Fockers and Zoolander, you’d expect nothing less then side-splitting humor. You GET nothing less. Paul Rudd reminds me a lot of Steve Carrell in The 40 Year Old Virgin. Very awkward and uncomfortable moments from both leads create such great comedy genius.
The Supporting Cast is amazing too. With John Favreau, J.K. Simmons, Andy Samberg (both previously mentioned), Jamie Presley and Joe Lo Truglio, all having their moments and standout parts. It’s still very early in the year, with it being February and all, not to mention the fact that the movie doesn’t get released wide until March 20th, but you can count on I Love You, Man to be one of the year’s best comedies.
Well, I gota go. See Ya, MaGootch!
