‘Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist’ Review

Nick and Norah

Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist is a romantic comedy of sorts. Michael Cera is Nick. He’s a high school senior in a band with all gay guys who just got dumped by his “way too hot for him” girlfriend. He’s a bit obsessed and makes her mix tapes and calls her constantly. Kat Dennings is Norah. She’s a high school senior at a different school who is kinda sorta friends with Nick’s ex. Without even knowing him, she is obsessed with his awesome mix tapes and has a bit of a crush on him. They meet at a club while trying to find their favorite band, Where’s Fluffy, who do secret performances in New York City. Norah is embarrassed that she’s not with a guy so she talks Nick into kissing her in front of everyone to prove she’s with someone. She doesn’t realize that this is the infamous Nick, maker of her friend’s mix tapes. Anyway, the movie is saved by Michael Cera’s usual awkward performance but other than that it’s your typical teenage romance film. I didn’t have high hopes going in, and I came out unimpressed.

Nick and Norah

The movie is filled with cliché after cliché for romantic comedies. Nick isn’t over his ex. Even though Norah really likes him, he’ll do anything for the ex. Norah has an ex too, played by Jay Baruchel. No matter how much she shows she is diggin Nick, when her ex is around, she can’t say No to him. It’s just something that COULD happen in real life relationships, but its annoying to watch on film. But of course it’s all wrapped up in a nice little package in the end to satisfy all the tweens that were on their edge of their seat wondering what would happen. Will they end up together in the end? Will they both realize their exes aren’t worth it? I WONDER!!!

Nick and Norah

I’ll be honest with you. I had no desire to see this movie. Michael Cera is the same character in everything he has ever done. Although he does get in some good lines, I wonder when people will start getting sick of it. This movie was made in the post-Juno era with the same themes in mind. And I’m not a big fan of that movie. Its begging to be recognized by the same crowd with its quirkiness and obscure soundtrack. It does show a cool look at New York City as the couple travels around looking for their favorite band but the laugh out loud moments are too few and far between. And I’m assuming this was supposed to be a comedy, a romantic comedy. It may be a good movie to take your chick to because I can see how it would relate more to the female audience, but only if there’s nothing else playing and you have nothing better to do.
