By far the funniest movie of the year, Pineapple Express the stoner action comedy, is laugh out loud funny from the time they spark their first joint, all the way until the whole barn is burned to the ground. I am a huge fan of Judd Apatow and thought Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s writing was hilarious in Superbad. The combination of the three mixed with the creative style of indie director David Gordon Green (Snow Angels, All the Real Girls) makes for the best comedy of 2008 so far.
Seth Rogen plays Dale Denton, the process server who dates a high school chick. Rogen always makes for a very likable character in his recent films and he does not disappointment. But James Franco as Saul Silver, who plays Denton’s dealer, steals the show. This is the first time Apatow has worked with Franco since the TV cult classic “Freaks and Geeks”. Franco plays the best stoner character ever put on the screen passing even Sean Penn’s classic Spicoli. You can’t help but love Saul is this film.
The supporting roles were great as well. Craig Robinson (The Office, Knocked Up) was funny as the slightly gay henchman, Matheson. The biggest surprise though was Danny McBride (Hot Rod, Foot-Fist way) as Red. This guy is going to be a household name very soon. He’s hilarious. I’m excited to see him in Tropic Thunder in a couple of weeks. I’m glad they left out a cameo from Jonah Hill, even though I think he’s very funny in some of the other Apatow films. Hill seems like he’s been getting a little old, not making me laugh too much in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Walk Hard.
The writing in Pineapple Express is ridiculous, but great. There are two fight scenes in this movie that will have you rolling. There’s everything from titty twisters, to people getting smashed over the head with bongs. If you are a fan of stoner comedies then you will really love this one because it’s one of the best I’ve ever seen. You will be reciting lines from the time you leave the theater until you get home.
The story develops not only into a ridiculously fun action movie, but a story about friendship. This is definitely a movie to go see (high or sober) with a few buddies. Afterwards maybe stop at a diner and talk about all the best parts, even if one of you are bleeding to death.

one of the funniest movies i have ever seen, i would have bumped up that rating to a possible 9.0 in terms of comedy movies. if the dark knight is these years top rated drama then this is the comedy so far. unless tropic thunder can blow it away…. but i’m not so sure about that.
